The Season Of Lent

During the Lenten time all of us should remember personal prayers, read the Holy Scripture and attend the liturgy of Sunday Mass.

Fasting – we are called to abstain from meat on Fridays by those who are 14 years old and older. On Good Friday additionally we should fast which means intake of one full meal by those who are 18 to 60 years of age.

Devotions – Also, we are invited to attend Lenten Devotions to reflect on the redemptive sufferings and death of our Lord on Fridays at 7:30 P.M.

February 26, 2010 – Bitter Lamentations #1
March 5, 2010 – Stations of the Cross
March 12, 2009 – Bitter Lamentations #2
March 19,2010– Stations of the Cross
March 26, 2010 – Bitter Lamentations #3
Good Friday at 3:00 P.M. – Stations of the Cross with children

Lenten Giving – Our parish traditionally uses the Alms Box in the vestibule of the church for the benefit of the poor. Please continue to support this great cause to help the less fortunate of our society. “When you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right is doing – your almsgiving must be secret, and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:3-4)

Ash Wednesday – The Beginning Of Lent

On Wednesday, February 17, 2010 the Church begins the season of Lent. On that day two Masses will be celebrated: at 12:00 P.M. with the Blessing and distribution of Ashes and at 7:00 p.m. with the Blessing and distribution of Ashes.

Spiritual reflection for Ash Wednesday: Beginning on Ash Wednesday we are called to repent, to change our minds about the way we live our lives in the sight of God. In the reading from the Book of the Prophet Joel we will hear that he summoned infants, children, the newly married and the elderly to an assembly of prayer indicating that they were repenting. Ash Wednesday summons everyone to enter into a forty-day fast. All are called to pray. All are invited to give alms. We will all gather on Ash Wednesday because we know that we need to “to return to the Lord.” Joel tells us that we can do that only by returning with our whole hearts, that is, with a motivation that is deep inside us. The ashes marking a cross on our foreheads will indicate that we are entering in the Lenten period of change that will leave us never to be the same again.

During the season of Lent all parishioners are welcome to attend Lenten Devotions.

On Friday you are invited to attend Stations of the Cross with the reading on the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ at 7:30 PM. This will give us the opportunity to reflect upon the redemptive sufferings of our Lord.

Caring for our homebound brothers and sisters

Fr. Joseph continues his weekly visitations of the homebound. He administers the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion, and has been providing our brothers and sisters with calendars and Christmas wafers. The Holy Cross Church gives to each homebound a beautiful poinsettia through the efforts of St. Nicholas Ministry. Please join us in remembering our homebound in prayer. Each Thursday evening we have special healing Mass for the sick and homebound.

Blessing of our Rectory expansion

The celebration of the rectory expansion was an important and enjoyable celebration at Holy Cross Church. We cherished the presence of Rt. Rev. Dr. Anthony Mikovsky, Bishop of the Central Diocese of the Polish National Catholic Church. He presided over the Mass with co celebration of available Sunday morning clergy of NY / NJ Seniorate. The Bishop’s inspirational homily invited us to witness our faith in building the Holy Cross Church as our testimony of God’s presence in our community.

The celebration of the Mass with the presence of the Bishop Anthony Mikovsky was spiritual nourishment for us all. The beautiful liturgy with the youth and congregation participation was remarkable. The Adoration Society took part in the procession, the youth read the prayers of the faithful, the children sang an offertory hymn – “The Prayer of St. Francis – Make me a channel of your peace.” The lectors, altar servers and ushers took part in the celebration.

Following the Mass, on this beautiful day, the blessing of the rectory took place. The blessing of engraved pavers with the family names of generous donors took place in the parish hall.

A delicious dinner was sponsored by the Cyman family in their appreciation for the rectory expansion. Delightful food was prepared by Mrs. Renata Cyman with the help of volunteers Hughie and Beverly Vickerilla, Angela Bucci, Tatiana Mludzik. During the reception, Dominick Bucci, the rectory expansion project coordinator, commented on the power point presentation, prepared by Fr. Joseph. Several pictures described the progress of the building expansion. A list of the generous donators was included at the end of the presentation. Our heartfelt thanks to all those who contributed toward the Building Fund, especially: The Bucci – Gulla Family; The Cabrejos Family; The Cyman Family; The Daum Family; The Hitchcock Family; The Holy Cross Church, Commack, Long Island; Katinsky Family; The Kiame Family; The Lazor Family; The Ludkiewicz Family; The Merson family; The Michinski Family; The Obssuth Family; The Peano-Asbaty Family; The Pellegrini Family; The Plaxa Family; The Rotsaert Family; John Ruyzam Family; Joseph Ruyzam Family; Stella Skawiski; Helen Skawinski; The Sleece Family; The Suhok Family; The Yuswacks Family;

My family would like to thank the Parish Committee who not only initiated the rectory expansion in 2007 but made important decisions to help finalize the project. We would like to thank each and everyone who in any shape or form supported and helped to build the rectory expansion. We thank also those who were part of dedication ceremony on Sunday Nov. 15, 2009.

God bless you and your loved ones,

Rectory expansion and accessibility projects

Great news -– Our Rectory expansion is completed.

The rectory was painted by Dominick Bucci, Brian Bucci, Lenny Hrinuk, Fr. Joseph, Mrs. Renata, Michael and Natalie Cyman to save on the cost of the labor.

The entrance door to the parish hall has been accommodated for handicap accessibility. The step was eliminated by placing a new concrete ramp. Our parish hall is now handicap accessible. Moving any furniture or items to the parish hall is also much easier.

The front patio was completed. We thank for all received to date donations. Any donation of $1,000.00 or more entitle donor(s) to have an engraved brick paver at the sidewalk in front of the rectory.

Fr. Joseph and his family donated and planted new shrubs, covered the cost of soil and seeds for the landscaping in front of the rectory. This donation was made in memory of his mother, Agnieszka and brother, Andrew Cyman.

On Sunday November 15, 2009 we will host Rt. Rev. Dr. Anthony Mikovsky the Bishop of the Central Diocese. On that Sunday there will be one Mass celebrated at 11:00 A.M. fallowed by the blessing of the addition. The reception will take place in the parish hall. The buffet dinner style will be provided and sponsored by the Cyman Family as a token of appreciation for an accomplished project. All are invited to attend this event with the opportunity to meet Bishop Anthony. Please write the name of your family and number of people attending on the sign up list located in the parish hall. Thank you.
